Gold Qualifier Mexico

06 September 2021

The Gold Qualifier was dressed in silver for Epic Taxco last Saturday. The beautiful colonial town, famous for their silver mining, was the host for the third national enduro venue. The race started in the main plaza with the Santa Prisca Church as the background, the riders took off in a lift that would take them to the top of the Huixteco Mountains where the action started to unfold. The rain had hit the mountain for a couple of days and the slippery and muddy trails were waiting for the riders.

The race had 228 riders to attack a 25km course and five special stages with an elevation of 1080 metres.

The first special stage was the longest of the day with a 3.5km run. Ricardo Peredo from Cuadro Cycling Club would start to pull away from the rest of the riders, but the local hero, Luis Lugo from Cube Bikes Mx was hanging on and pushing to repeat his 2019 first place.

From there, they pedaled back to special stage two for a 1.3km stage. This stage was particularly slippery, but the riders charged with all they got. Peredo kept the lead, as Lugo and Moritz Brueggman tried to keep up.

The following two stages, special stage three and special stage four had the same result from the previous stages, and despite stage four being very technical, Peredo kept pulling away. So, they had only to face the last stage of the day. A urban stage in the alleys of Taxco that ran from the lookout  at the top of the city, down to the finish at the town´s central plaza. Peredo eased down as he had a comfortable lead and gave away some seconds to Lugo, that took the stage win in front of his home crowd.

At the end Ricardo Peredo led the race from start to finish with an overall time of 22:39.3. Taxco´s hope, Luis Lugo, had to settle with second place this time stopping the clocks at 23:15.0. The podium was completed by the German rider Moritz Brueggman from Erik´s Costume Garage who ended up two minutes back with 25:29.3.

Race director Javier Martinez Gallardo said: “The race was a great challenge for the riders due to the harsh weather that surprised us this weekend. Also, the stages were pretty technical, including the urban stage that ran to the central plaza. But with this beautiful background, it is an amazing venue to race in. We invite all the riders to come next year to experience this spectacular place.”
