This year the EWS and Juliana have joined forces to offer five women’s rides at our races in Rotorua, Tasmania, Madeira, Whistler and Finale. Guided by Juliana SRAM Ambassador Anka Martin, these rides are a mellow way to explore the local trails and have some fun without the pressure of racing. Here Anka gives us the lowdown on what went down when they hit the Blue Tier Trail in Derby.
“Next stop was Tasmania, Australia for the second round of the Enduro World Series and the second Juliana Women’s Ride out.
Having heard so much about this little mountain bike mecca, I still had no idea what to expect out here, but man, was I blown away. Not only by the amazing network of trails that has been built here over the last few years or the spectacular native forests, giant sized trees and breathtaking scenery, but by the incredible passion and pride that radiates from all the local people who have worked their butts off to essentially create a “Disneyland” for mountain bikers. They have transformed this little sleepy little town into possibly one of Australia’s biggest (and best) mountain bike destinations and it has all been purely driven by their passion and love for mountain biking.
It was this friendly hospitality and will to please that helped to create a fabulous day out for the girls. Vertigo Shuttles drove 24 very enthusiastic ladies up to the top of the famous Blue Tier Trail – about an hour’s drive from the town of Derby. Once dropped off and on the bikes, it was a cacophony of hollers and hoots, giggles and chatter as everyone swooped down 18km of absolutely stunning trail. It had it all, flow, berms, jumps and ferns for days. The type of trail that makes everyone feel like an absolute champ on your bike. The trail is as hard as you want it to be, but the one ingredient that suited everyone was the stoke factor. Smiles for miles and 24 happy girls.
Buzzing after the ride, listening to all the stories and re- enacting all the “O Crap” scenarios it was time to treat all the ladies to a high tea with champagne of course – as you do down here in Tassie apparently! Huge thanks to the Weldborough Hotel for getting this set up for us and spoiling us with all the lovely treats.
This small town hospitality really creeps into your heart and makes it pretty easy to fall head over heels in love with a new riding destination, its culture and all the people involved. Will I head back here for a riding holiday? Hell yes and you should jot this one down on your HAVE TO RIDE destination list.
Thanks again to the Enduro World Series and Juliana Bicycles for making these women’s days at the races possible, to Vertigo Shuttles for driving us, to the Weldborough hotel for treating us like VIPs, to all the blood and sweat that went into creating these amazing trails and then of course a huge shout out to all the ladies for signing up, coming along to ride, sharing, progressing and having a laugh – you guys rock!”
